I’m not much of an adventurer when it comes to the outdoors, but wearing the Vesuvius Poncho makes me feel like I could climb mountains, ha.
When I first got the Lion Brand ZZ Twist yarn, all I could think of was making a corner to corner crochet pattern design for it, but having been in my yarn storage for more than six months, the pattern idea slowly metamorphosed into the Vesuvius Poncho.
And boy, am I glad it did. The Vesuvius Poncho crochet pattern is inspired by geometric lines and simple patterns. I wanted to create a simple yet eye-catching design with two unique patterns, and I believe I achieved that with the colour combination on the front and back panels and the hem and neck line.
This poncho crochet pattern lets you decide how to wear it, open or pinned at the sides. If you are familiar with my designs, you’d know I have a thing for snap fasteners and buttons (sometimes).
CONSTRUCTION
The Vesuvius Poncho is made from two panels joined at the shoulders/arms. It is worked from side to side rows so that the stitching ends with a vertical look. We start at the outer edge and work up to shaping the neckline, then increasing the 2nd half of the panel to work the remaining rows.
The two panels are made the same way, you only switch the main colour in each panel. I decided on this style beacause ‘why not’?
THE YARN
What a yarn the Lion Brand ZZ Twist is. This is my first experience with it and I would sure like to work with it some more. Even though it is listed as a worsted weight, medium 4 yarn, it feels more like a DK (double knitting) light weight, medium 3 yarn- not complaining, since DK yarn is one of my favourite.
It is a hundred percent acrylic yarn, but you could easily be fooled into thinking it was a soft cotton blend. The way it is twisted gives it such a beautiful aesthetic. I experienced some splitting while making the Vesuvius Poncho, but overall I would like to work with it again.
Unfortunately, I only just discovered (after designing the Vesuvius Poncho) that the ZZ Twist has been discontinued. What a shame! I hope they bring it back someday.
If you’re like me and do not like to restrict yourself when it comes to making a pattern, you can substitute with these- Berrocco Comfort, Lion brand Jeans . Just ensure that the gauge matches with that of the pattern.

GUEST BLOGGING
You would agree with me that the world of crochet is filled with many amazingly talented designers. There is no shortage of creativity in the crochet community. And it makes me happy when we work together for good.
Working with other crafters or brands is always a delight. In 2020 I worked with LoveCrafts.com to design the Red Riding Shawlette. However, I am particular about the values of brands I partner with. We cannot shy away from the ugliness around us, but we can channel our positive energy around to effect positive changes in attitudes and mindsets.
This why I decided to collaborate with The Hook Nook to bring you the Vesuvius Poncho Crochet Pattern, which was also an absolute delight to design. Jessica (The Hook Nook) believes in and advocates for the good.
