The Tropic Poncho Crochet pattern has tested my patience as a designer to the max, and not because it is a difficult pattern.

It just was not coming together for some reason. Even though it was always going to be a poncho, the image I had in at the beginning was different. Nevertheless, I had to design it in this final outcome because I was led in that direction.
Also, the fact that the pattern went through numerous stages of ‘frogging’ (unravelling stitches) and uses sport weight yarn took me a while to complete.
The Tropic Poncho is made for easy wear. A beautiful layering garment that reminds of lush greens, exotic fruits and good, clean air. The blend of cotton and acrylic fibers make it just right for many seasons. You can easily use all arylic yarn for a warmer piece during winter.
I mentioned that this pattern is not difficult. It is intermediate level; which can also be made by an advanced beginner- you only need to be consious of your stitch count.
I did not fully appreciate the beauty of the Tropic Poncho until I was doing the photo shoot. All of a sudden, I could see myself wearing this ALL THE TIME. I really love that it is so easy to wear, no stress on shaping, beautifully complements your outfit. I felt so good wearing it. I hope you enjoy making and wearing it.
The Yarn
I was a but adventurous with this pattern and used two different yarns but with the same fiber fiber content and in the same weight.
The Jojoland Carnation, gifted to me by my mother, is a cotton/acrylic blend with 75%/25% fiber content respectively. It comes in 50 gram skeins with 130 yards. I used 9 and a little more (not up to half of the tenth skein) for the Tropic Poncho Crochet pattern.
Even though on Ravelry and Jojoland website it is described as aran weight yarn, it feels and looks more like sport weight. I was a bit lost on there, so I I decided to go with sport weight.
It comes in other gorgeous colourways, and looks more like hand dyed yarn. It is not the softest of yarns though and I am hoping that with use the texture will soften.
The Alize Cotton Gold solids is one of my favourite yarns. I have used it in a couple of designs, the Pretty Stitch Top and Open Waves Top. It is also a sport weight yarn with cotton (55%)/acrylic (45%) blend.
Finished Size
25.5” wide by 24.3” long
Customizing
This is mainly a One size fits most pattern. For a bigger size, use a heavier yarn like DK or Worsted Medium 4, with appropriate hook size.
You’ll need
- Sport weight yarn in main colour (MC) and contrast colour (CC). 1050 yards in MC, 250 yards in CC. This pattern uses MC- Jojoland Carnation and CC- Alize Cotton Gold Solids
- 4mm hook
- Tapestry Needle
Stitches/Abbreviation
DC- double crochet
CH- chain
ST- stitch
Special stitches-
DC V Stitch– DC in stitch, chain 1, DC in same stitch
Popcorn – (this is done in the opposite way. Your popcorn will pop out on the wrong side) Make 5 DC in stitch. Remove hook, insert from the back of the 1st stitch and through the front of the last stitch, pull loop through. (For this pattern there is no Chain 1 after, only follow pattern as guided).
Notes:
- Pattern is written in U.S terms
- Chain 1 does not count as a stitch.
- Each DC V Stitch stands as 3 stitches
- All Popcorns are done in the middle of the V-St
- Please pay attention to your stitch count
Tips
- To avoid weaving in so many ends, you should carry your MC along when you’re making the Popcorns. In that case, you may need more than the suggested amount of yards for the pattern.
- Always join the CC with a slip knot on your hook. Leave a 3 inch tail which you can carry along the first few Popcorns. Snip CC at the last popcorn with a good amount of tail that you will carry along on the next row.
- Always ensure that you pull the non-working colour tight when you want to exchange the yarn. This way, you won’t have slack yarn that shows through the stitches.

Row 37: DC in each st across, chain 1, turn. Snip yarn with long tail to sew both parts closed at the back.

Align parts and sew at the back. Use preferred sewing.
Front Edging, Neckline & Joining
- Join yarn at the bottom of project, Chain 3, skip next st, V-st in next. (skip 2 sts, V-st in next) repeat till you get to the Chain 3 at the back of neck area. Make V-st in same st as Chain 3.
- Skip the chain 3, V-st in next V-st, DC in V-st (same place you have the popcorn), DC in next V-st, V-st in middle of 2 DC rows, V-st in middle of joining, V-st in middle of 2 DC rows, DC in next V-st, DC in next V-st (same place you have the popcorn), V-st in next V-st, V-st in same st as DC
- (Skip 2 sts, V-st in next) repeat till last 2 sts, skip 1 st, DC in last st. Snip yarn, leave long enough tail to close front across 22 V-stitches.
Side joining (done on the WS)
Tip– leave a little tail at the beginning.
You will be sewing through the chains. Counting from bottom up, sew from the 13th to 17th V-st. That would be across 5 V-sts. Sew back toward the beginning, tie tails together, snip yarn. Repeat for other side.
Fringes
Due to the shortness of the fringes, you may see some unravelling. See this tutorial on how to make knotless fringes to keep your fringes on.
Add short fringes (about 3 inches long before folding) in the middle of each 2DC rows.
And that’s it! I hope you enjoy making and wearing your Tropic Poncho Crochet pattern. I’d love for you to share this pattern on your social profiles too. Thank you very much.
