I had a different idea in mind when I started this T-shirt yarn Crochet Storage Basket. It was going to be something for our boys, a pouf!

So why did I change from pouf to basket? I was going to use two colours of the Coral and one of black, I realised later in the pattern that the second Coral yarn was not as thick as the first. How disappointing!
I do not know how I missed that when buying the yarn. It would have misshaped the project if I went on to make a pouf. So, I had to think quick on what to turn it into. I am glad that the baskets turned out great, also two balls of yarn was enough to make two of them with just a little left over of each colour.
Plus I have one extra ball left to play with. It’s a win! The black yarn has more meters/yards than the Coral. Overall, I like the sturdiness of the baskets and the way they ‘pop’. They’re a bright addition to any child’s playroom or any space they will be used in.
This pattern is real quick- thanks to the super bulky yarn. But you need to be careful working with it because your fingers and arm could hurt with a tight tension. I was working with a sport weight yarn right before I picked up this project, so the disparity took a few hours to adjust to.
You can make these baskets in a weekend or less if you’ve got enough free time within the day.
If you would like to make your own tshirt yarn you can follow this tutorial and see this rug I made with old t-shirts.

- This pattern is worked in joined rounds. All HDC stitches are worked in opposite rounds.
- End all SC rounds by joining in BLO of 1st st. Start all SC rounds by going under both loops
- Colour change should be done when you’re joining a round.
- If you are concerned about the strip of yarn running along the inside of the basket, snip yarn after each colour change- ensure the tail is long enough to weave in or carry along across some stitches.
