Native Print Drawstring Bag- Free Crochet Pattern

The Native Print Drawstring Bag is one of my favourite patterns. One of the many things I love about crochet is how an image in your head can come to life by the skillful use of a hook and string, and I am constantly amazed at the results of those ‘head images’.

I’m African and we have a lot of prints in our native textile attires which we call Ankara. This textile fabric can be sewn into dresses or skirts or anything your cfreative mind allows for.

Some of the designs on this Ankara are so intricate you would feel as though you were staring at a heiroglyphic writing; and if you;re anything like an idea hunting, motif searching pattern designer you would find them fascinating.

So I wanted to mimic one of those designs, though a very basic one. One of the things that make those Ankara stunning are the vibrant colours they sometimes come in.

Combining the colours in this design was an experiment, as I was not certain they would blend nicelym but I am so glad to have been proven wrong. I just love the pop of colour on this Native Print Drawstring Bag.

You could decide to make this with or without a handle- use it as a gift bag, a purse to carry around on small errands, a fashion accessory for your girls to take to ‘tea parties’.

This design is basic Tapestry Crochet and you will need to know how to change colours. The PDF of this pattern includes a colour changing tutorial.

It’s ok if you sell items you made using Craft-Her patterns. And I’d really love it if you mentioned it was from LM.
And please, do not sell or mass produce Craft-Her patterns- (the only exception is if you are donating the handmade items to charity)

Thanks. You can read more on LM policy here.

  • I have just been looking at your beautiful projects in Ravelry. I have “favourited” a few but really want to fave them ALL! I especially love your Native Print Drawstring Bag, the colours are just beautiful with the pretty design. If I didn’t already have several WIP’s going, I would start it right away. Thank you for sharing your beautiful work!! 🙏

    • I am so glad you did that on Ravelry. I know how it is with WIPS, I've got a couple I'm battling to finish. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts.

  • I would love to make this Beautiful bag in a larger size, And I LOVE the watchband I have big wrists and it is difficult to find the right fit.

Thank you so much for the free patterns.

    • Your comment is EXACTLY why I'm still crocheting and sharing my patterns. I will cherish it! Thank you so much.
On that note, I have updated the post with the number of stitches you'll need if you intend to follow this same pattern to make a larger bag.
