Let’s go back to the wild wild west with this Hippie Granny Square Vest. I’ll never get enough of seeing the granny square motif turned into amazing designs. Whoever created the motif did great for our crochet community. Thank you!

When I think about the wild wild west, I think of ranches, farm work, horseback riding, dirt digging, cow milking, dung (gross, huh?). Of course I also think of cowboys, outlaws, renegades and apaches (oh boy! I’ve read too many historical novels). Those thoughts inspired this Hippie Granny Vest. I’ll also credit the ddranchwear for feeding my imagination of creating this hippie vest.
As this design is inspired by the old west era I decided a little ruggedness was in order. Besides, this is handmade so a little diverstiy is required. That’s why it has a criss cross joining with strands of yarn for a classic look- hopefully as classic as the Granny Square.
If you’d like a less rugged looking vest, here’s my very first vest design- the Open Back Summer Vest

JOINING
- You want to join the front panels to the widest part of the back.
- You could join them from the wrong side or the right side.
- For the top of the arm, measure 2 strands of yarn (15″ long) and criss cross through the spaces.
- For the sides, the strands should be about 20″ long. Measure armhole length then criss cross across.

Approx. Armhole Length | 6.5” | 7” | 7.5” | 8” | 8.5” | 9” |
Adding Fringes

Patricia Viviano says
REALLY like this but would love to make it very plain with out the patch. Could you please tell me what I would have TO skip over
Rose says
Hello Patricia, Do you mean the patch at the sides and tops (the criss cross lines) or the 2 colours? If the criss cross lines, match stitch to stitch and sew them together by going in and out of the chains and stitches. If you mean the 2 colours, just use one colour. Does this answer your question?
Margaret Wilis says
love the look of this vest!!

Thank you Margaret.
