Free Crochet Pattern- Winter Frost Cropped Crochet Sweater – Part 1

Yayy! I designed my first Crochet Sweater- a cropped crochet sweater that has elements that I like and have been looking for for a while. The name Winter Frost came about from a suggestion on my Instagram page and also inspired by the yarn.

Designing crochet garments was something I eased into gradually. With the first garment I made, I thought it would become easier to make more. Then I designed the second crochet clothing and realised that it is not all that easy especially when you’re making sure to get the measurements right. But as with becoming great at anything one needs to keep at it.

I wanted this design to be simple but functional for different purposes. A kind of sweater you can wear to work, play or lounge around in; which keeps you warm while also looking trendy.

This sweater is so cozy. You can wear this in an office by pairing it with accessories, a nice skirt or pants with heels or flats and you’re set!

I decided to model three ways you can wear the Winter Frost Cropped Crochet Sweater. It looks great in any of those ways. The size worn in the pattern is a U.S small size.

As you make the Winter Frost Cropped Crochet Sweater you will see that it is shaped a bit different with wide shoulders and a subtle puff at the top of the sleeve. This is in part due to the yarn used, and also the stitching.

The stitching also helps to make the sweater less bulky. If it feels snug at first, it will naturally stretch with use. The Winter Frost Cropped Sweater is not meant to be drapey. It is desgined to keep you comfortable, warm and stylish.

I’ve got to also say that this a quick pattern to make, and by quick I mean you can finish this in a week, maybe less if you’re in a rush. It took 2 weeks and a few days of measuring, writing notes and double checking to have the pattern published.

The Yarn

Premier Yarns Candy Shop is a worsted weight medium 4 yarn (that also feels like aran weight due to its slight bulkiness) which comes in many beautuful colours. This pattern uses the colourway Wafer.

It is wonderfully soft and and stripes beautifully. You should know though that even with the same colourway, each ball stripes differently. You may also find that some parts of the yarn are bulkier that others – I don’t see this as a problem since it does not distort the stripes and you will hardly find any knots in the ball, hopefully.

Candy Shop is 100% acrylic, comes in 140g/5oz balls of 238 meters / 260 yards.

Construction

The front and back of the winter frost sweater is worked in rows which will be joined afterwards. While the sleeves and collare are made in rounds. So really, you will only be seaming the front and back pieces and weaving in tails.

The material may feel snug at first, but because the stitching is somewhat loose (working in BLO coupled with a tall stitch like DC does that), it will stretch. Of course, that is if you work with the same yarn as used in the pattern. Otherwise, match your stitches with the gauge.

Due to the length of the pattern, it has been divided into 2 parts. Here, you will make the front and back pieces. In part 2, joining the peices, the collar, sleeves and finishing.

Finished Sizes: (to fit bust size) XS/28-30, S/32-34, M/36-38, L/40-42,

1XL/44-46, 2XL/48-50, 3XL/52-54

Gauge: 14 DCs across/4 rows= 4 inches

• 3 (3, 3, 4, 4, 5 5) balls worsted weight, medium 4 yarn. This pattern uses Premier Yarns Candy Shop, 260yds/233m; 5oz/140g
• 5.5mm hook
• Stitch markers
• Tapestry Needle

FRONT

Chain 56 (60, 62, 66, 70, 72, 72)

Row 1: DC in 4^th ch from hook and across. Ch 1, turn

Row 2: HDC in 1^st st, BPDC in next. HDC in next, BPDC in next st. Ch 1, turn

Rows 3: FPDC around 1^st st, HDC in next, FPDC around next, HDC in next. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn.

Row 4: repeat row 2.

Row 5: DC in each st across. Ch 1, turn

Row 6: in BLO, DC in each st across. Ch 1, turn

Row 7: 2DC in 1^st st, DC across till last st, 2DC in last st, Ch 1, turn

Row 25 (27, 29, 29, 31, 33, 33): 2DC in 1^st st, DC in next st and across till last st, 2DC in last st. Ch 1, turn

Row 26 (28, 30, 30, 32, 34, 34): DC across. Ch 1, turn

Row 27 (29, 31, 31, 33, 35, 35)- 28 (30, 32, 32, 34, 36, 36): DC across. Ch 1, turn.

Neckline– Divide the number of stitches in 3 parts, mark the neckline by placing st markers at the number of skipped sts in the middle.

Number of stitches to skip 12 (12, 12, 14, 14, 16, 16)

Row 31 (33, 35, 35, 37, 39, 39): DC across to point of st marker. Ch 1, turn

Row 32 (34, 36, 36, 38, 40, 40): skip 1^st st, DC in next st and across. Ch 1, turn.

Row 33 (35, 37, 37, 39, 41, 41): 2DC in 1^st st, DC in next st and across till last sts, 2DC in last st. Ch 1, turn

Rows 34 (36, 38, 38, 40, 42, 42) – 35 (37, 39, 39, 41, 43, 43): DC across. Ch 1, turn

For sizes XS-M only

Using the last row on the front panel, count the number of stitches to make for the last row on the back panel.  Mark the neckline, place stitch markers in required stitches. Be sure to count the stitches on both left and right of the back panel to ensure they are the same.

Row 36 (38, 40): DC across, snip yarn, weave in tails. On the other side, join yarn in st, Ch 3, DC in nextst and across. snip yarn, weave in tails

Continue with Sizes L, 1XL, 2XL and 3XL below

Row 40 (42, 44, 44): DC across. Ch 1, turn

Row 41 (43, 45, 45): 2DC in 1^st st, DC in next st and across till last st, 2DC in last st. Ch 1, turn

For sizes L-1XL only

Row 42 (44): Repeat the same step as for sizes XS-M to make the last row on the back. DC across. Ch 1, turn.

Continue with sizes 2XL and 3XL below

Row 46 (46) – 47 (47): DC across. Ch 1, turn

Row 48 (48): Repeat the same step as for sizes XS-M to make the last row on the back. DC across. Ch 1, turn.
