Dreamer Crochet Poncho Pattern for Boys

The Dreamer Crochet Poncho pattern is a good reminder of what Fall looks like. I mean, what is Fall without colour?

So, the yarn I made this poncho from had been sitting in my yarn closet almost a year before I finally figured out what to make with it. As I crocheted, I was reminded of the story of Joseph in the Bible, a young man whose father loved him so much and made him a coat of many colours.

Wouldn’t you agree with me this is a poncho of many colours? Haha. I was really tempted to name it accordingly, but I also remembered the young chap in the story was a dreamer, and that sounded better.

CONSTRUCTION

The Dreamer Crochet Poncho is worked in one piece. So, it is pretty straight-forward. After that, the neckline is raised and the edges done. Easy peasy and fun.

Gauge: 15 sts and 17 rows to 4inches (10cm)

Finished size–

Length: from Shoulder down is 16.5 inches, from Neck down is 19.5 inches
Width: without edging is 15.5 inches; with edging is 19 inches

To fit: 2-4 year old child

You’ll need:
– Alize Cotton Gold; sport weight yarn (100g/330m); 55% cotton, 45% acrylic
2 balls colour 3300 (multi-colour) , 1 ball colour 4530 (brownie)
-5mm hook
-Needle to weave in ends

Abbreviation
FSC- foundation single crochet. See here for tutorial
SC- single crochet
DC- double crochet
CH- chain
SL ST- slip stitch
ST- stitch
TR= treble crochet

MC- main colour

NC- new colour

Special Stitches-
• Popcorn stitch
Make 5 DC into stitch, take out hook from the loop and insert it from front to back through top of the first DC and into the loop of the 5th DC, pull the loop through the 1st DC, ch 1.
• DC Spike
Make DC in same stitch/space SC is made (in same stitch where Single Crochet was made)
• FPTR- front post treble crochet
Yarn over twice; go around post of stitch from the front. Yarn over, pull out a loop (4 loops on hook), *yarn over pull through 2 loops*, repeat * to * three times
• FPTR2TOG- front post treble crochet 2 together or front post treble crochet decrease
[Yarn over twice; go around post of required stitch from the front, yarn over, pull out a loop] (4 loops on hook) *yarn over pull through 2 loops*, repeat * to * twice (2 loops left on hook). Repeat [ ], (5 loops on hook), repeat * to * twice, (3 loops left on hook), yarn over pull through all 3
• BPDC- back post double crochet
Yarn over, insert hook from the back around the post, yarn over and pull out a loop, *yarn over pull through 2 loops*, repeat ** twice

Notes:
– Pattern is written in U.S terms.
– When making the Popcorn, insert hook from back of 1st DC to front of 5th DC.
– Ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
– Ch 3 stands as 1 DC.
– Back of poncho may be longer, that is ok; this gives better balance when worn.
– Since the yarn has no name, I named them MC-multi colour, NC (new colour)-brownie.
– Edging is made in multiples of 8.

DREAMER PONCHO CROCHET PATTERN

Row 1; FSC 57. Ch 2, turn

Row 2: SC in first st, DC in next. *SC, DC*, repeat * to * across. End with SC in last st. ch 1, turn

Row 3: *DC spike, SC spike in next*, repeat * to * across. End with DC in last st. ch 1, turn

Row 4: *SC, DC spike in next*, repeat * to * across. End with SC. Ch 1, turn

Rows 5-50: repeat rows 3 and 4. Join new colour, brownie

Row 51: (with NC) *DC spike, SC* repeat * to * across. Ch 1, turn

Row 52:*SC, DC spike*, repeat * to * across. Ch 1, turn

Rows 53 & 54: (with MC) repeat rows 51 and 52

Rows 55- 70: repeat rows 51 and 52 alternating colour every 2 rows

Row 71: (continuing with NC) DC spike, SC in 12 sts, Chain 30, SC, DC spike in remaining 12 sts. Ch 1, turn. (insert stitch markers in both ends of the chain. See photo)

Row 72: SC, DC spike in 12 sts, SC 33 in chain space, DC spike, SC in remaining 12 sts. Ch 1, turn

Row 73: DC spike, SC in 12, DC, SC in 33 sts, SC, DC spike in remaining 12 sts. (End with DC). Ch 1, turn

Row 74: *SC, DC spike*, repeat * to * across. Ch 1, turn

Row 75: *DC spike, SC*, repeat * to * across. Ch 1, turn

Rows 76-77: repeat rows 74 & 75.

Row 78: (with MC) *SC, DC spike*, repeat * to * across. Ch 1, turn

Row 79: *DC spike*, repeat * to * across. Ch 1, turn

Rows 80-85: (with NC) repeat rows 78 and 79 alternating colour every 2 rows

Row 86-137: (with MC only) repeat rows 78 and 79. Don’t break yarn

Edging

Row 1: Ch 2, SC 137 across. Ch 3,turn
Tip: make 1 SC into each row.

Row 2: DC 137 across. Ch 3, turn

Row 3: *Skip 2 sts, FPTR around 3rd, go back and DC in 2nd skipped st, DC in next 2, FPTR around 3rd st (same st you made the first FPTR) , skip 1st, DC in next 3*, repeat * to * across. (End with DC in last 3 sts). Ch 3 with new colour, turn (break MC at this point)

Row 4: (with NC) DC in 2, [BPDC around FPTR,* DC, Popcorn, DC *, repeat * to * in next 3 sts, BPDC around FPTR, DC in 3], repeat [ ] across, DC in last st. ch 3, turn

Row 5: (with MC) DC in 2, [FPTR2TOG (make this around the 2 BPDC you made in previous row), DC in 7], repeat [ ] across. End with DC in last 4 sts

NECK

Start as indicated by arrow (disregard those 2 stitch markers in front)

join NC with Sl st.
Round 1: Ch 1, SC in same st, SC in 32, Sl st in corner, SC 33 in back , Sl st in corner, Sl st to first SC

Round 2: Ch 1, SC 66 around. Sl st to 1st SC

Round 3: Ch 1, *SC, DC spike*, repeat ** around (end with DC spike). Sl st to 1st SC

Rounds 4-15: repeat rows 2 and 3
