After my failed attempt at creating the Diagonals Afghan, the first thought and ‘feeling’ was to put it away for good and forget that I ever attempted it.
Nevertheless, I think this a pattern anyone might find useful for other purposes. So I wrote it our for you all who’d like to use it sometime. I think the joining techinique is especially useful.
Remember, this was a failed project and you can read up the things I did wrong in this pattern.
It’s ok if you sell items you made using LM patterns. And I’d really love it if you mentioned it was from LM.
And please, do not sell or mass produce LM patterns- (the only exception is if you are donating the handmade items to charity)
Thanks. You can read more on LM policy here.

Joining the Parts
Note:
- at every ‘intersection’ (where all the parts meet), Chain 1 then flip
- joining is done with SC with RS facing up and SL ST with wrong side facing up
- you can identify the RS and WS by looking at the Single Crochet at edging
- when joining with SC, join only in the Back and Front loops and vice versa for joining with Sl St
Directions:
- With RS facing up, place the diagonals side by side and align them stitch to stitch. We want to start joining from rows 8-15 (the rows that are all single stitches). SC 16 (in back & front loops) across to the ‘intersection’.
- Chain 1, turn the work upside down so that wrong side is facing up, twist the hook to be on top the work.
- With WS facing up, place the white piece in between the ‘intersection’ and start Sl Stitching to the next intersection.
- With WS facing up, join another diagonal piece with Sl Stitch
- Continue Sl Stitching along both pieces till the next intersection
6. Chain 1, Flip the work upside down again, and join another diagonal piece with RS facing up
7. Repeat step 2 above to join another diagonal, break yarn. To continue joining horizonatally, repeat from step 1
Closing up the WS
Now, start Sl Stitching the wrong side, break yarn and repeat on the rest. Weave in all the tails.
Edging
Note:
- If you did not weave in the tails from joining on the RS, just carry them along as you make the edging. That’s what I did
- the ‘bottom of valley’ is the point where you have the last SC from joining as seen in Photo 3.
- from any ‘bottom of valley’ point, start by making a Sl St in the front loop (as shown in photo 3)
- SC all up the ‘valley’, chain 1,
- SC down the valley, Sl St in back loop, Sl st in front loop.
Continue to SC ‘up the valley’, Sl st in back and front loops, SC ‘down the valley’
4. at the ‘intersections’ make SC2tog, continue to SC around
End with Sl St in back loop at ‘bottom of valley’, weave in tails. Wet block.
If you give this joining technique a try, I’d love for you to share with me on Facebook or Instagram with #loopinglym.

How do you sew these pieces together to make an afghan. You never wrote the finishing of the afghan.

Hi. I didn’t because it did not turn out right anyway. And I wouldn’t want someone else making the same mistake. But if it’ll make any difference, I’ll put it in the post. Thank you for stopping by.
