Crochet Prose- To Niche or Not to Niche?

A Crochet Prose- To niche or Not to niche? I’ve never read a crochet prose, never thought I’d write one, BUT here we are. If this craft is your business too, you may have wondered- to niche or not to niche? As yet, I’ve not concluded on an answer.

I think there’s some advantages to ‘niching’. A couple being you’d be well known for something in particular which could lead to you being an expert of such. Another is being able to streamline your focus.

Ok, let’s do a quiz. Of course, your answers will may or may not be the same as mine, but you kinda understand what I’m trying to say about niching. And we know that this doesn’t mea there aren’t many other fantastic designers who create these same projects.

  1. When you think about baby blankets, which designers first come to mind?
  2. When you think about shawls and wraps, which designers first come to mind?
  3. When you think about cardigans and sweaters, which designers first come to mind?
  4. When you think about C2C, which designers first come to mind?
  5. When you think about colourful projects, which designers first come to mind?
  6. When you think about baby clothes, which designers first come to mind?
  7. When you think about amigurumi, which designers first come to mind?

While I desire for my work to be well known and loved, I just do not see myself commiting to a partiular niche in crochet. For goodness sake, there is SO MUCH I have not even attempted in this crochet world that my fingers itch to take on.

So a while back, as I was working on a project, I got hit with something poetic and picked my pen and just began scribbling. The words flowed seamlessly and there was no need for much editing because what I share below are the thoughts that flowed through my pen, and thoughts I have actually experienced in this crochet business.

This crochet prose mirrors my state of mind for now. Who knows if tomorrow I am a powerhouse in a crochet niche? I look forward to such a day.

I hope you enjoy it and it inspires you and gives you answers too.

Crochet Prose- To Niche or Not to Niche?

… wondered long and hard about niching
In this crochet journey of mine
Often swamped with visions of textures and inspiration
Shapes and colours follow right along
So I have come to the conclusion,
I cannot niche

I hear the call of Blankets
I see the rush of Miscellany
The cut of Cardigans minister to me
Scarves are never far and Shawls beckon to me
The Headbands are a constant
Baskets and Bags, Cowls and Cocoons, Mittens and Mats
Pumpkins and Poufs, Hats and Hearts
all driving me crazy
So for the life of me, I cannot niche
I am incapable of it

In my dreams I’m Chevroning
C2Cing and Tunishing
As though those weren’t enough,
I’m Popcorning and Puffing
Shelling and Clustering
Crabbing and Slipping
I am bombarded with Stitching
Oh! that I would wake up
And see them all laid out before me
Now tell me, how can I niche?

So I resign myself to the whims of my creativity
I resign myself to never meeting up to the plethora of ideas
I will open my mind to the endless possibilities of Crochet
I will explore many more techniques
I will go as far as Crochet will take me
And I will create as much as life lets me
So for the life of me, I cannot niche
I am incapable of it.

xoxo
