This Chunky T-Shirt Crochet Tote is like an everything bag. A bag you can pick up in a hurry and dump all your personals in.

About 60 percent of the time, my ideas for a design changes before I begin. Sometimes, it chages midway into the design. That was the case for this Chunky Tote. I unravelled this bag up to 5 times before finding contentment with this design.

One good thing about this tote; it is sturdy and has a beautiful stitch definition. It is also spacious and can carry a considerable number of items (should you decide to use it on a trip to the grocery store).  The curved boat shape lends a comfortable and easy way to carry it. So, strap it on your shoulder on your arm or your hand, it fits any way.

 

Also, you can eaily dump this bag in the washer and have no fear of it becoming shapeless- it is made from recycled t-shirts after all.

 

The best part of working with this yarn is how fast the project progresses. Honestly, if you really wanted, you could make all the parts in a day and join them another day.

Size: Circumference 28″/ Length 12.5″

Notes:

• Pattern is written in U.S terms
• Ch 1 does not count as a stitch, unless otherwise stated
• The number in parenthesis ( ) is the total number of stitches at end of row
• SC, TC in next… stitches means SC in next, TC in next in the required number of stitches
• As indicated, you only work in BLO on the stitches at the sides. Once you get to the bottom stitches to be increased, you work in both loops.
• While making the Treble Crochets, they’ll naturally pop out at the wrong side. So you have to push them out to the right side.

You’ll need:

• Super Bulky Yarn (2 balls). In this pattern, Hoooked Zpagetti T-Shirt yarn (120 mtrs/131.2 yds), colour- Grey. You can get it here. Should you decide to make your own t-shirt yarn, you can follow this tutorial here.
• 11.5mm hook
• Jumbo Tapestry needle. You can get it here
• 1 appropriate sized button
• Fabric to line bag

Stitches/Abbreviation

SC- single crochet

TC- treble crochet

CH- chain

SL ST- slip stitch

BLO- back loop only

FLO- front loop only

Panel– make 2

Tips:

– Take a look at photo below for where to work the SCs on the opposite side of row 1

– DO NOT break yarn at the end of the panels. Continue on to Edging

– Remember to work in BOTH LOOPS in the bottom stitches you will be increasing

Row 1: Ch 10, in back ridge SC in 2^nd Ch from hook, SC in 7, 3 SC in last ch. Turn upside down, in BLO SC in 8- (19). Ch 1, turn

Row 2: in FLO SC in 8. In both loops, 2SC each in next 3 stitches. In FLO, SC in 8- (22). Ch 1, turn

Row 3: SC in 1^st st, TC in next. SC, TC in next 6 stitches, (2SC in next, SC in next) repeat 3 times in next 6 stitches, TC, SC in 8- (25).  Ch 1, turn

Row 4: in FLO, SC in 8. In both loops, (2SC in 1st st, SC in next 2 sts), repeat 3 times in next 9 sts. In FLO, SC in 8- (28). Ch 1, turn

Row 5: SC, TC in next 8 stitches, (SC in 3 sts, 2SC in next) repeat 3 times in next 12 sts, TC, SC in 8- (31). Ch 1, turn

Row 6: in FLO, SC in 8, (SC in next 4 sts, 2SC in next) repeat 3 times in next 15 stitches. In FLO, SC in 8- (34). Ch 1, turn

Row 7: SC, TC in next 8 stitches, (SC in next 5 sts, 2SC in next) repeat 3 times in next 18 stitches, TC, SC in 8- (37). Ch 1, turn

DO NOT break yarn

Edging

(Chain 1 on this row counts as a stitch, and this is where you’ll be making your handles later on)

Front panel– Chain 1, SC in 1st st, SC 6, SC 7, Ch 1. Sl st in side of SC. Now, snip yarn

Back panel– We’re basically repeating the same thing as above. Only difference is the loop we pull out for the button.

Chain 1, SC in 7 sts, on the second side of the panel, insert yarn in stitch, pull out a 1 inch loop and finish making the SC, SC in next 6 sts. across. Chain 1, sl st in SC. Snip yarn, weave in tails.

Place stitch markers in chain 1 stitches at the

Middle Strip

Leave a 60 inch tail before making a slip knot.

Row 1: Ch 3, SC in 2^nd ch from hook, SC in next. Ch 1, turn

Row 2: SC across. Ch 1, turn

Row 3: SC across. Ch 1, turn

Row 4: 2 SC in each st across. ch 1, turn

Rows 5-7: SC across. Ch 1, turn

Row 8: 2SC in 1^st st, SC in next 2, 2SC in last st. ch 1, turn

Rows 9-29: SC across. Ch 1, turn

Row 30: SC2tog in 1^st 2 sts, SC in 2, SC2tog in last 2 sts. Ch 1, turn

Rows 31-33: SC across. Ch 1, turn

Row 34: SC2tog, SC2tog. Ch 1, turn

Rows 35-37: SC across.

Leave another 60 inch tail to sew to panel.

 

Joining

Tip– in the absence of an appropriate tapestry needle, you can use a hook to make your joining (see photo 4).

Match stitch to stitch and sew front panel to the strip. Pass yarn through the back loop of the front panel and through the side of the strip all around (see photo 1).

Handles

Start from any side, slip stitch in both loops of chain 1, chain 38, slip stitch in opposite chain 1. Pull out a tail twice the length of the measuring tape, snip yarn, pass it through the stitches to the other side. (this is to prevent weaving in so many ends).

Repeat same for other handle. Slip stitch in ch 1, Chain 38, slip st in opposite chain 1. Finish off.  Sew button on front panel.

Turn bag inside out, weave in tails.

Lining

(p.s- this is my first time to line a bag, but will try my very best to explain)

Fold fabric and cut out a piece with the dimensions below

Length- 14 inches. Width- 14 inches.

Because the bottom of the bag is curved, we will cut out a piece that is 3 and half inches tall. Width should be 13 inches wide.

Seaming: Sew each side at half and inch. Fold the top at 1 inch and sew

Proceed to lining the bag. Bag should be inside out. Should you need a detailed tutorial, Futuregirl.com has a fantastic one here 

• use pins to hold fabric in place just below the top stitch
• pass needle in through the stitch and out through the fabric all around
• finish off by going up into the stitch (photo 2), and across (photo 3), then in through the thread 3 times (photos 4). Snip off.

Turn bag inside out again and its set.
