I’ve got to tell you this C2C Crochet Origami Shrug is one of the easiest crochet clothing you will make. However, this shrug did not start out being all easy. I’ll tell you why.

Having learned to make the c2c triangle fabric, I decided to make something nice with the knowledge. In the C2C Crochet Bunny Baby Blanket pattern, I talked about this shrug (it was not a shrug at the time. Just a piece of flat fabric I had no hope of salvaging).
After making the fabric I realized too late that it was not going to fit for the picture I had in mind. To say I was discouraged would be an understatement, I was loathe to unravel the whole thing so decided to dump it in a corner while still brainstorming how to ‘save’ it.
Then one day on Pinterest, I saw a fabric being folded like an origami piece and a light bulb came on. Phew! Finally, I could turn this piece into something worthwhile instead of it staying hidden in the bottom of my ‘unhappy with’ projects. The best part was the fact that it was an easy solution- all that was needed were two extra pieces to complete the shrug.
This c2c origami shrug is warm, maybe not closed up enough for the winter season, but it makes a beautiful layering garment. It is also a stylish and unique piece of clothing.
The shrug is a loose fit, and I decided to add snap fasteners at the end to give the option of wearing it as you please. Of course the snap fateners are optional, but I certainly like the overall look the lend the shrug.
The Construction
This c2c origami shrug is basically made of 1 rectangle and 2 squares, joined and folded downward to create armholes and a collar.
The stripe colour was me trying to incorporate an angle to the overall effect/look of the shrug. You could decide to use just one colour all the way.
The Yarn
Blocking
If using worsted weight yarns as recommended, blocking your pieces before joining is necessary. This is because by the time you are done making them, you may discover that your fabric feels tight/stiff and slightly bulky. Thus the need to block to make the material have some drape.
Finished size of body: approx. after blocking
Sizes | Width | Height | To fit Bust |
S/M | 29″ | 21.3″ | 34-38″ |
L/1XL | 30.5″ | 23.5″ | 40-46″ |
2XL/3XL | 32.5″ | 25.5″ | 48-50″ |
Gauge: 7 blocks = 4 inches

Tips on sewing:
You will be leaving a long tail after making the squares, say 20 inches. When sewing the squares to the body and sewing the armhole, use only the tail from the square.
After sewing to the body, pass yarn through the blocks/stitches to the point where you want to sew the armhole. This way, you have less ends to weave in, you also have a sturdier work because the sewing is all connected.
Joining the Pieces
Armhole:
Row 1: From bottom, HDC 2 tog, in 2 block spaces, *2 HDC in st, 2 HDC in space, repeat from *around. Join to 1st st.
Row 2: in BLO, HDC around. Join to 1st st. snip yarn, weave in tail
Collar
At the bottom corner of right flap, join dark yarn in first block
Row 1: Ch 1, HDC in same stitch, HDC in next st, HDC in middle (in between the blocks), 2 HDC in next space. Continue to repeat 2 HDC in stitch, HDC in middle, 2HDC in space across. Ch1 , turn
Row 2: In BLO, HDC across
Row 3: HDC across
(For the next row, stop at row 10 for S/M, row 12 for other sizes)
Rows 4-12: repeat rows 2and 3. DO NOT break yarn, continue to bottom
Bottom:
Row 1: Ch 1, 1 HDC in each row of bottom of collar. In each block, continue to repeat 2 HDC in stitch, HDC in middle, 2 HDC in space across, 1 HDC in each row of bottom of collar. Ch 1, turn.
Row 2: 2 HDC in st, HDC across, 3 HDC in last st, continue to the collar, HDC across. Join to last st. snip yarn, leave long tail to sew snaps.
Sewing the snaps (optional)
Sew snaps evenly across the bottom of collar. With the snaps facing out on the left side of collar, and facing in on the right side of collar. You may find this tutorial useful on sewing notions on crochet fabric.
Tie all loose ends, weave in tails, snip yarn and your C2C Crochet Origami Shrug is ready.
Isn’t it great that you do not have to pass through all the hurdles I did to get this shurg done? I hope you really enjoy making this as much as I did in the end.
Thank you!

Hello, can you tell me what the measurements are of the main rectangle of the piece before adding the squares?
Hello Vina,
I'm sorry I can't give accurate measurements as it was not noted down at the time.
The snaps are so perfect! Love this design 💕
The snaps were an after thought, but they work out great. Thank you for stopping by and sharing your thoughts.
I LOVE this shrug, beautiful! Now I really need to try and learn the C2C. Thank you so much for this beautiful pattern
Thank you so much Amanda. Trust me when I say YOU CAN do this. I only recently learnt the c2c technique and this is my second design. So, I totally trust in your ability to make one.
